The old man took to closing his eye
The old man took to closing his eye, opening when invited by his faithful pupil. The old man had made a bond of trust. The pupil observing this fact with curiosity. In the artist’s mind when sightless this little monkey saw the anxious placing of responsibility on another. Putting himself in the hands of a dutiful companion. Frailty emphasising at the passive side of his character. And selfish. Idle. Understanding this the boy saw that this power was his to define. This was the bond of trust. Experimentally given. He was to discover himself as an individual and to share what he wished with his old master. A different boy would have asked himself why, if that was the case, what gain the incumbrance of this old bundle of a person watching. Better go play with my own age. The boy before asking could already see the answer. The joy this so-called bundle felt in the tangible elements of its vision. Had read it explained in the old man’s mind manys the time. Great rehearser. Within it there lay somewhere a vision intangible. As one gropes questioning for it amongst tangible external vision, one becomes aware in moments his retrospect that the intangible vision is touched upon sufficiently to glimpse its internal nature. The old man had explained that in the case of himself the internal nature of his vision was desire of satisfaction. The boy remarkably never felt such need. Yet could see it. Only natural he should assist such an eloquently inarticulate need as the old drivel’s. The old man for his part thinking this out felt a truer state of understanding had been reached between them. So he waits to glimpse the internal nature of the boy’s vision. Eye closed. What’s he doing? Where’s he gone? Wait and see.
